Defending the Brooklyn Bridge

Winning?

Sun Jul 26, 2009, 11:40 PM
I came in second place at a photography workshop I went to last month. I'm calling this post "winning" because i feel like the walk on who just landed a starting spot on a top team. Yeah, maybe I'm not the best guy on the team, but before going to camp that day there was no way i'd consider myself even in that argument.

Depending on how I'd like to spin this, I came in 2nd at a photo competition between 25 military photographers, all of which had to compete just to receive an invitation for this workshop. Yeah there are guys who are deployed, or ones who didn't know/make the deadline, but at the end of the day I impressed myself.

On top of that, I have been selected to attend this year's Eddie Adams Workshop -- another incredible honor. The year began on a sour note, I didn't receive even an honorable mention at my service or military-wide awards, but this year seems to be coming around quite nice. It's a shame that I don't get the chance to use this improved skill shooting guys down range, at least for the near term. I'm still shooting and plan to have plenty to submit for awards at the end of this year.

The key here for me is that i keep improving. As long as I shoot better this month than last, and keep expanding my portfolio I think I'll be fine. Still not sure how this turns into a paycheck after the military, but that can wait for another day.

Still working on this site, but it's something.

Hey I saw your response on Yahoo answers and I am very interested in becoming either a Navy or Marine photographer (Preferably Marine) and I would love to here a little bit about what kind of experience, ASVAB score etc...

I have really wanted to join the Marines but I don't want to willingly go into a war I don't believe in, however I have huge respect for any of the armed forces and I want to help capture that.

I am also willing and aware of the danger, and for the last 4 years I have wanted to be apart of some sort of Military branch.

no experience is required, the marines train the skills. Check about.com military section for asvab info, thats where i found it all before i enlisted.

dont join unless you want to deploy, you may not end up over there but you need that mentality. i dont know what to tell you about wars you dont believe in. you agree to serve the president for 4 years and go where he wants you to go. if you joined today there will be another election before your contract is up.

I plan on talking to a recruiter more about it, I have already, but I definitely had a different mindset.
And I also realize that deploying is most likely the idea. Do you have anything bad to say about it?

thanks for the kind words. It's rather overwhelming trying to find a photographic outlet beyond that time in Afghanistan. I'm glad you found something you liked. I'll keep posting some more as i experiment with ways to make a living with a camera.
